SALEM, Conn. (AP) _ State police say a trooper shot a man who was acting irrationally near a burning home and barn in Salem.
Police and firefighters responded to a house fire on Witter Road shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities say a log cabin and barn were engulfed in flames and several vehicles were blocking the property entrance.
State police say that while firefighters were putting out the blaze, neighbors reported seeing a distraught man in a field near the fires. Capt. Thomas Garbedian of the state police says the man acted more irrationally when a trooper approached him, and the trooper shot him.
Authorities haven’t identified the man. Police say he was in serious condition at Backus Hospital in Norwich.
Police declined to say whether the man had a weapon.
