HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Tolland Republican Sam Belsito is the newest member of the Connecticut General Assembly.

Secretary of the State Denise Merrill on Wednesday administered the oath of office to Belsito in the Hall of the House of Representatives as family members and supporters looked on.

Belsito will represent the 53rd Assembly District, which includes Ashford, Tolland and Willington.

Belsito defeated Democrat Anthony Horn by 554 votes in a May 14 special election. He fills the seat vacated by former Democratic Rep. Bryan Hurlburt, who resigned in April to accept an appointment to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Services Bureau.

Belsito, wearing a yellow tie and matching pocket square, owns a men’s clothing store. He called his victory “a big thrill,” but said he won the seat “for the citizens of Connecticut.”
