They say it was just before 11:30 p.m. when 59-year-old Robert Johnson was crossing the street at Main and School Streets in the town’s Central Village section when he was hit.

The vehicle, described as a dark-colored SUV, possibly an Isuzu Rodeo or Toyota 4-Runner, has extensive headlight damage and possibly some front end damage.  It was spotted fleeing the scene westbound on School Street.

Johnson was treated at the scene, then rushed to the Plainfield Backus emergency room where he was later pronounced dead.

Plainfield police are urging anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them at 860-564-0804 or at the anonymous tipline at 860-564-7065.
