NORWICH, Conn. (AP) _ A state prosecutor says a Norwich police sergeant was justified when he shot a man driving a car at him.
New London State’s Attorney Michael Regan released the results of his investigation Monday. He said Sgt. Patrick Mickens was defending himself and others when he shot Gino Nicasia in his right leg in the parking lot of Backus Hospital last August.
Regan said Nicasia drove his car at his mother and Mickens, who fired several shots at the car and suffered a hip injury when the car hit him.
Police say Nicasia’s mother told them that she brought her son to the hospital for a psychological evaluation because he was hearing voices.
Nicasia faces criminal charges including assaulting an officer.
