Investigation Underway Into Death Of Man Who Drove Into Police Lot

Meriden Police say a man who told them he had smoked crack and swallowed cocaine died at a hospital overnight. Police say the man, whose name has not been released, became uncontrollable, and they handcuffed him to stop him from fighting and used a Taser to shock him.

State Police are investigating the death, which comes a week after a member of the police department, Evan Cossettte, was found guilty of federal charges of shoving an inmate in a holding cell and lying about it to investigators. He resigned from the department the following day.

In this latest case, police say the man drove into the back lot of the police department Sunday evening, acting erratically, and telling them he had used drugs. Police say he flailed about, spitting saliva and blood and shouting, and tried biting the officers.

They say he continued the out-of-control behavior in the ambulance and at the hospital, and died some time after his arrival.
