New England National Scenic Trail Complete

BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (AP) — Hikers and environmentalists are celebrating the completion of a 220-mile route known as the New England National Scenic Trail.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports that the trail had been completed from Long Island Sound to the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border. But the final 20-mile stretch rerouted along a ridge just west of Route 202 that separates the Quabbin and Amherst watersheds.

The trail was relocated to the west of the highway to avoid crossing the Quabbin watershed.

The trail ends at the New Hampshire border, but advocates hope it will eventually stretch north through New Hampshire to the headwaters of the Connecticut River.
