HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ A Jamaica native has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release for the 2004 shooting death of a woman in East Hartford.

Kelvin Daye was sentenced on a capital felony conviction Thursday in Hartford Superior Court. A jury convicted him in March of killing 36-year-old Trupti Patel, but acquitted him of raping her.

The 43-year-old Daye proclaimed his innocence Thursday. Prosecutor David Zagaja (zah-GUY’-ah) read a statement from Patel’s husband, who said he’s devastated by his wife’s death.

Zagaja called Daye a sexual predator who raped and killed Patel. He says DNA from both Daye and Patel were found on a condom.

Daye was arrested in May 2011 after a DNA sample he was forced to give in a drug case matched DNA collected in Patel’s case.
