Haz-Mat Concerns After Old Saybrook Fire

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection  Emergency Response Unit  was called to Sound Manufacturing, a precision  metal cutting  business on Donnelly Road in Old Saybrook after a late Thursday afternoon equipment fire.A laser is used  by the company and the lens is  coated with  zinc  selenide, which can release  toxic and flammable vapors when  exposed to high heat.

Four employees who were exposed to the smoke appear to have symptoms of respiratory irritation.They were decontaminated and taken to  Middlesex Medical Center in Essex for evaluation. .

DEEP is on the scene with local fire and police as well as the Guilford Fire Department and Sub Base  Fire Department Haz-Mat  Teams.
