HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ A move to license tattoo artists in Connecticut is closer to being inked.

The state House of Representatives on Thursday voted 122-13 in favor of a bill that would require the state’s approximately 200 tattoo technicians working at tattoo parlors to obtain a license, which would have to be renewed every two years.

The initial fee would be $250 and renewals would cost $200. Applicants would be required to complete training, first aid classes and pass an examination.

Willimantic Rep. Susan Johnson said Connecticut is one of nine states that does not license tattoo technicians. The state currently requires tattoo artists to operate under the supervision and instruction of a physician, who must inspect their shops at least once a year.

The bill now moves to the Senate.
