NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ State Sen. Toni Harp has filed the necessary paperwork to run for mayor of New Haven.
The veteran Democratic senator announced Monday she registered her campaign at the city clerk’s office. She was joined by her son Matthew, a group of friends and her campaign treasurer.
Harp has been a state senator for 20 years, currently serving as co-chairman of the General Assembly’s Appropriations Committee. She previously served as a city alderman for five years.
Harp said she surveyed the field of candidates and “realized that no one was better suited in terms of experience, the skills to get the job done, or the vision to bring people together” to rejuvenate New Haven.
About a half dozen Democrats have expressed interest in the seat being vacated by Mayor John DeStefano.
