Officials: “E-Crash” System Will Enhance Data Tracking

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ A transportation research center at the University of Connecticut is creating a new electronic system to better track data about vehicle crashes across the state.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Monday the information will be used by public officials and others to identify all sorts of problems on the roads.

They could range from trees that are frequently struck by cars to the frequency of drunken driving arrests along certain stretches of roadway.

The Department of Transportation currently receives more than 5,000 paper crash reports each month from local police departments.

Only the state police electronically file their reports, which represents 30 percent of all reports.

There is currently a yearlong backlog of reports.

The new “E-Crash” system will allow officers to submit data from their police cruisers.
