Blumenthal, Murphy Say Senate Still Can Pass Gun Bill

By SUSAN HAIGH,  Associated Press

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut’s two U.S. senators say they still think there’s a chance to pass gun control legislation this year following its recent Senate defeat.

Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy told reporters Friday in Hartford that some of their colleagues who voted against expanded background checks have experienced a backlash from voters.

The two Democrats said they plan to capitalize on the political heat they say some of their colleagues are feeling and try to sway those senators who were close to supporting the bill.

Blumenthal said some small tweaks will be made to the bill to make it more amenable, but the basics will not change.

He said some family members of the Newtown school shooting victims were in Washington, D.C. last week lobbying for the bill.
