Dog Thrown In River Had Starved To Death

ACUSHNET, Mass. (AP) _ Police in Acushnet are trying to figure out who threw an emaciated dog into a local river.

Animal control officer Rebekah Tomlinson said Tuesday that a necropsy found pieces of metal in the female pit bull’s stomach, indicating that it had been going through the trash looking for food.

She tells The Standard-Times the dog found in the Acushnet River last month weighed about 30 pounds and should have weighed between 65 and 75 pounds. The dog died of starvation.

Police are looking for a man who was seen pushing a baby stroller over the Slocum Street Bridge and tossing a plastic bag into the water.

A $2,500 reward is being offered in the case.
