Rabid Fox Shot In Wolcott

Police in Wolcott say they shot a rabid fox to death this week.

On Tuesday, they received a report of a fox on the back porch of a town resident on Midwood Avenue.  The fox had apparently lunged at and bit a man before fleeing into the woods.  The bite did not puncture the man’s shoe.

The next day, a police officer and the town’s animal control officer returned to Midwood Avenue where the fox was located in a wooded area behind a house.

Instead of fleeing, the fox began walking toward Officer Jeff Bender.  Bender shot the animal.

A minute or so later, the fox started shaking before abruptly getting up and running toward Officer Bender, who fired more rounds.  The fox leaped at him, causing a scratch to the officer’s finger.

The fox tested posted for rabies at the state lab.
