VERNON, Conn. (AP) — Michael Skakel’s former attorney says he was reluctant to call experts at times during Skakel’s 2002 murder trial because he worried about a perception that as a rich man he could “just buy experts.”

Michael Sherman took the stand today as Skakel’s latest appeal trial began in Rockville Superior Court, with Sherman defending an accusation he failed to competently defend the Kennedy cousin. Sherman has maintained he did all he could to prevent Skakel’s conviction.

Skakel, who is serving 20 years to life in prison for the 1975 bludgeoning death of Greenwich, Conn., neighbor Martha Moxley, claims he got ineffective legal representation from Sherman. Prosecutors say many of the issues raised by Skakel’s current attorney were rejected in earlier appeals.
