UConn To Open Against Maryland In Brooklyn

The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, home of the NBA Brooklyn Nets,  will host the opening game of the 2013-2014 UConn college basketball season. The Huskies will face the Maryland Terrapins Friday,  November 8.   The two teams have not met in more than a decade;  they last played in March, 2002,  in the  NCAA East Regional Finals.  Maryland won that game 90-82.

UConn Athletic Director Warde Manuel says the the school “couldn’t be more pleased.  ”  He points out there is a strong UConn fan base in and around New York City,  Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon said it will be a great experience for Maryland players and fasns.

Maryland, who made the NIT this season,  will have all five starters returning,  UConn Coach Kevin Ollie expects the Huskies top six scorers and top five rebounders all to return,  including All-Big East first team pick Shabazz Napier.

UConn has won three of the teams’ five previous meetings.
