PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ The Department of Homeland Security has selected seven universities to participate in a nationwide emergency preparedness initiative.
Secretary Janet Napolitano made the announcement Tuesday at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Drexel is among the schools chosen for the Campus Resilience Pilot Program. The program is designed to help colleges share best practices and develop innovative ideas for responding to man-made or natural disasters.
The other six schools are Eastern Connecticut State University; Green River Community College in Auburn, Wash.; Navajo Technical College in Crownpoint, N.M.; Texas A&M University; Tougaloo College in Jackson, Miss.; and the University of San Francisco.
The participants represent a range of institutions, from urban to rural and large to small. Napolitano said the program will engage school officials, students and community leaders.
