Branford police think they have ended a spree in which tires for Honda automobiles were being stolen in parts of southern Connecticut.
Throughout the month of March, there’d been thefts or attempted thefts of tires and rims from the Branfon Honda dealership on West Main Street, according to police.
Late Friday night, officers conducted surveilance of the dealership using both night vision and their new encrypted radio communications equipment.
Around three a.m. Saturday, officers spotted a tan Nissan with two suspects. They then watched as the two entered the Brandfon property and began taking the tires and rims from a brand new car in dealer’s lot.
Officers moved in and arrested 31-year-old Damian Liberda and 29-year-old Athanasios Hasiotis, both of Berlin.
Police in Wallingford, Milford, and Watertown had investigated similar thefts but it’s not known if Hasiotis and Liberda were connected to those incidents.
Hasiotis faces various larceny charges and is free on $1,500 bond. Liberda also faces larceny charges. In addition, Liberda has a pair of pending cases against him in Danbury and Canton. His bond was set at $15,000.
