WALLINGFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut’s education commissioner has rejected a request by Wallingford to waive the 180-day school year requirement, saying town officials can pursue other options to make up for an unusually high number of snow days.

Commissioner Stefan Pryor says granting the proposed five-day waiver would have set a bad precedent. He told Wallingford officials recently that they should consider canceling more April vacation days and holding classes on Memorial Day.

Wallingford Superintendent of Schools Salvatore Menzo says town schools had to close for nine days because of storms including Superstorm Sandy and last month’s blizzard. Officials already have extended the school year to June 28 and canceled some April vacation days.

Other school districts in the state have taken similar actions because of the high number of snow days.
