Funding Restored For Groton Sub Construction

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a measure that restores funding for construction of a second attack submarine in 2014.

Military contractors led by Groton’s Electric Boat are building two Virginia-class submarines a year.

The funding for a second submarine in 2014 had been removed from the budget, but it was restored in the measure passed Thursday by the House. The bill now goes to President Barack Obama for his signature.

U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, a Democrat who represents eastern Connecticut, says the vote empowers Electric Boat to continue work that has ripple effects for the region’s economy.

The Navy is working on a five-year contract to deliver 10 attack submarines.
