Westport Marine One Of 7 Killed In Accidental Explosion

A Westport native was one of seven Marines killed during a training exercise Monday in Nevada.

It was first reported on the Westport blog 06880 by Dan Woog.

Roger Muchnick was a 2008 graduate of Staples High School and was killed when a 60 mm mortar shell accidentally exploded during a Marine training at the Hawthorne Army Depot in Nevada. Several others were injured.

Muchnick has served two prior tours in Afghanistan. He was a member of the Second Marine Division.

The Pentagon has immediately halted the use of the mortars while it investigates.
