In a 9-1 vote last night, the New Britain Board of Education approved a proposal for “neighborhood schools.”
This will now mandate all students to go to schools in their neighborhood, or closest to where they live in the city. There is an exception, those students entering fifth- and eighth-grade in September can remain where they are as long as their parents/guardians submit in writing by May 1 that they will be providing transportation for them.
Currently, many students are bused to schools far from where they live.
Those in favor say it’s about rejuvenating communities and schools in New Britain.
