HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro says she was personally inspired by the new pope’s call to help the most vulnerable in society during his installation Mass at the Vatican.
The Connecticut Democrat attended Tuesday’s service as part of a congressional delegation representing the United States.
DeLauro said the installation of Pope Francis was “a beautiful and moving occasion.” She said the pope’s call to protect the least fortunate is particularly important as people around the world struggle with hunger and poverty.
Francis, a native of Argentina, is the first pope from Latin America and the first named for the 13th-century friar St. Francis of Assisi, whose life’s work was to care for nature, the poor and most disadvantaged.
