Five construction workers working on renovations at a lab building at the University of Connecticut Health Center were taken to the Emergency Department at Dempsey Hospital after the partial collapse of the area they working on.
A UCHC spokesperson stressed that no patients were hurt and no researchers were in the section of the building where the collapse took place. The injured workers were being evaluated. At least one was able to walk to an ambulance without assistance, and at least one was wheeled to the ambulance on a stretcher. By 10:30 p.m. all had been treated and released.
A portion of the ceiling on the fourth floor came down as routine demolition work was taking place. Active construction and demolition work at the building was suspended, but lab workers were able to continue their duties in parts of the building not being renovated.
The Health Center campus is currently the scene of construction for the Jackson Labs genomic medicine research building as well as renovations on existing buildings in the complex.
