Suspect Dead In Willimantic Officer-Involved Shooting

WILLIMANTIC. Conn. (AP) _ State police say a Willimantic police officer has fatally shot a man armed with a hatchet.

Two Willimantic officers were called to an apartment building shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday about a man acting in a threatening manner. Police say the man had a hatchet and refused officers’ orders to put it down.

One Willimantic officer used a stun gun on the man without success and the second shot him with his service revolver. The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead soon after arrival.

The Willimantic officers were not injured.

State police are investigating the shooting.

The medical examiner’s office is to schedule an autopsy.
