Fire Guts Torrington Home, Damages Two Others

TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) _ Torrington officials are trying to determine the cause of a house fire that was fueled by high winds and spread to two nearby homes.

No one was injured.

Flames were shooting out of the second floor of the house on Griswold Street when firefighters arrived at about 2:30 p.m. Monday. No one was home at the time.

The fire was brought under control in about an hour.

Firefighters tried to protect the two neighboring homes by spraying water on them, but heat from the blaze melted siding and caused other damage to the houses. The home where the fire started was gutted.

The Torrington fire marshal is investigating the cause.  The American Red Cross is helping a resident of one of the damaged homes with housing, food and clothing needs.
