Blumenthal Criticizes Offer To Gun Makers

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Sen. Richard Blumenthal is lashing out at a suggestion by a Mississippi state official that gun makers should relocate from states where they face criticism from gun-control advocates.

Blumenthal, a Democrat, says the pitch from Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn is “preposterous” and that companies will stay in Connecticut because of the state’s quality of life and education system.

Gunn sent letters Thursday to 14 gun manufacturers in Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and North Carolina. In Mississippi, he said, they would not be criticized for providing weapons to people who enjoy hunting or want to protect their families.

Blumenthal said Friday that “competition among states for less protective laws is a race to the bottom that should be avoided.”
