Hurricane Injury Sidelines New London Police Chief

New London’s Police Chief is out of work effective today, after an injury suffered during Hurricane Sandy.

The city’s mayor put Police Chief Margaret Ackly on paid leave for medical purposes.  She was hit by a window during Hurricane Sandy.

The New London Day reported that she was at the city’s emergency management center, when a gust blew in a window, striking her in the head.

She kept running the force during and immediately after the storm, but Ackly has only been working 2-hours a day since late October.

A city official says the current leave is connected to that incident.

Deputy Chief Peter Reichard will serve as Acting Chief of the New London Police Department.
