The Women’s Beat with Bob Joyce
Rolling Along – Good Morning Husky Fans…Happy Valentines Day ! Well as we approach the final weeks of the regular season, the Huskies have certainly picked up the pace and taken no prisoners in their last three wins following their close call at St. John’s. But that win just as important than any this season knowing they can make big plays down the stretch to get seal the deal…Hopefully they can build on that with Baylor and Notre Dame ahead.
Since an 0-7 from 3 day in Queens, Junior Guard Bria Hartley has come alive and playing like the All American Honor deserved last season. Shooting well and more importantly, making good decisions with ball. Add to what Kaleena Mosqueda Lewis, Kelly Faris and even Caroline Doty recently, this is what Husky Fans were hoping from with the guards. The Brianna Banks injury will be tough to overcome being a lefty. She’s a good finisher around the basket and had become a pretty good defender. Most games she won’t be missed. Baylor and Notre Dame ? That’s when she’ll be missed most. So Mariah Jefferson will get more PT and certainly played well Tuesday at Providence. That first step was pretty quick..But it was PC..
And what more can be said of Junior Center Stefanie Dolson ? Over 70% shooting the last 11 games she’s played in, 6/12 from 3 and she’s hit her last 4. She’s giving opposing coaches a lot to think about with her play. And along with KML, those are your two UConn All Americans one would think this season. Stef so easy going and fun loving of the court. On the court, very attentive and playing with purpose. She’s in line to succeed Britney Griner as the Nation’s Top Post Player.
Speaking of Ms. Griner and the Defending Champs, they invade the XL Monday Night. She’ll get her points for sure, but the Huskies’ guards MUST contain Odyseey Sims. She was the difference maker in the December 2011 win in Waco. And to me, the BEST point guard in the country. The UConn Guards will have to step up on both ends of the floor to get the Huskies over the top Monday, against ND and if they’re to win the National Championship.
Finally, major props to Kevin Ollie and the Guys last night for their win over Syracuse. The way this group is playing for him and the staff, one has to believe he’s a candidate for Big East Coach of the Year. And if you think Jim Calhoun is very proud of him, somewhere in the heavens, Arnold Dean is smiling too for sure..
See you on the radio from the RAC Saturday !
