BOSTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren has invited a Boston mother whose son was fatally shot to be her guest at President Obama’s State of the Union address.

Warren said Kim Odom, a local pastor, has worked to reduce gun-related killings in her Dorchester neighborhood since her 13-year-old son Steven was killed in 2007 on his way home from playing basketball.

The Massachusetts Democrat says Odom is “a powerful voice calling for meaningful action to stop gun violence.”

Warren supports reinstating an assault weapon ban, prohibiting access to high-capacity ammunition magazines and strengthening background checks on gun sales.

U.S. Rep. Edward Markey has invited Ann Marie Crowell, whose son Brian was accidentally shot to death on Christmas Eve 1997.

Rep. John Tierney has invited Lynnette Alameddine, whose 20-year-old son Ross was killed during the Virginia Tech shootings in 2007.
