PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) _ A Rhode Island high school baseball team has invited Connecticut’s Newtown High to play a special game at the home of the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox.

The Pawtucket Times  reports that Tolman High of Pawtucket will face Newtown in a seven-inning game scheduled for April 20 at McCoy Stadium.

Tolman coach Theo Murray extended the invitation to Newtown coach Matt Memoli a few weeks after the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown that left 20 children and six educators dead.

Murray says the violence hit him hard and he wanted to do something to help Newtown’s healing.

Memoli called the invitation a “great gesture.”

The PawSox traditionally allow Tolman to play a handful of games at McCoy each season.
