Witnesses and spectators interested in attending the Gun Violence Prevention Working Group’s informational hearing at the State Capitol Monday found themselves in a line stretching down the sidewalk,  as Capitol Police checked visitors through metal detectors.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The legislature’s task force on gun violence and school safety is continuing its round of hearings on possible law and policy changes in response to the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown.

A subcommittee on gun violence prevention has scheduled an informational meeting and public hearing at the Legislative Office Building at 10 a.m. Monday. Large crowds are expected.

State Capitol Police Chief Walter Lee is requiring visitors to first pass through metal detectors because of the sensitive nature of the subject.

A subcommittee on mental health is holding a similar hearing at the LOB on Tuesday and the full 52-member task force will hold a public hearing Wednesday evening at Newtown High School.

The subcommittees have until Feb. 15 to forward recommendations to legislative leaders.
