HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is urging cities and towns to open warming centers to help people in need during a long stretch of freezing cold temperatures.

Malloy says overnight temperatures are expected to range from 0 to 10 degrees over the next several days. Factor in the wind chill and it could feel as cold as minus 15 degrees in some parts of the state.

The governor has also directed several state agencies to coordinate with shelters and the state’s 2-1-1 system for free information and referrals to help protect vulnerable people from the cold.

State counselors who help homeless people are working to find those at risk, get them to shelters and spread the word about the 2-1-1 system.
