A 23 year old Wallingford man was taken into custody after police used a taser to subdue him Friday afternoon. It happened at 69 Schoolhouse Road.Police had received a call from Michael McKormack’s mother that her son was despondent and might attempt to harm himself. At first he voluntarily agreed to be taken to a hospital for evaluation, but then ran inside and grabbed a handgun and pointed the weapon at two police officers in the basement of the home.
A police negotiator was able to get McKormack to lower the weapon and when officers attempted to take him into custody,he violently resisted and fought the officers. After the taser was deployed,McKormack was taken to Yale new Haven Hospital for evaluation.
The investigation determined the handgun was not loaded and had recently been illegally obtained by McKormack.
Cook Hill Elementary School was placed in lockdown for about 30 minutes as a precaution.
A police officer suffered a minor injury and was evaluated at MidState Medical Center and released.
