The Boston Red Sox say they’ve acquired pitcher Joel Hanrahan and infielder Brock Holt in a deal with the Pirates. The Red Sox will send four players to Pittsburgh — pitchers Mark Melancon and Stolmy Pimentel, infielder Ivan De Jesus and first baseman-infielder Jerry Sands.
Right hander Hanrahan is fourth among Natioinal League relievers the last two seasons, with 676 saves and a 2.24 ERA. Last year Hanrahan was named recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America, as the Pirates’ most valuable player.
Holt spent most of the 2012 season with AA Altoona, and led the Eastern League with a .322 average. He made his Major League debut with the Pirates in September.
