NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The Jets’ reunion with wide receiver Braylon Edwards is already off to an odd start.

Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that the Seahawks waived Edwards because they thought he could miss the rest of the regular season with a hamstring injury.

“We thought he had a three-week injury or so and it was going to be a while before he was back, and we weren’t sure if he would make it back,” said Carroll. “So we didn’t know.”

Edwards was claimed off waivers by New York on Tuesday. He’ll be joining a receiving corps battered by injuries. Rookie Stephen Hill sprained the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee on Sunday, Clyde Gates has been out with a concussion, tight end Dustin Keller missed Sunday’s game with an ankle injury, and Santonio Holmes was sidelined for the season early on with a Lisfranc injury.

Edwards participated in practice Thursday.

“I’m optimistic he’ll be ready to play on Monday,” Jets head coach Rex Ryan said, adding the team felt “different” about the player’s health. “But again, I’m going to lean on our trainers and our doctors to make sure.”

Edwards hasn’t caught a pass since Oct. 14. Carroll said he’d be a good catch for New York if he can get back on the field.

“I’m hoping he’s well,” said Carroll. “He’s going to be right at the cusp of getting back from what we understand with his hammy. He’ll be a good player for them. He’s a good football player. Hopefully he can get back and get well.”

The 29-year-old was a favorite target of quarterback Mark Sanchez while with the Jets. He had 88 receptions for 1,445 yards and 11 touchdowns over nearly two seasons with New York, helping the team to two straight AFC Championship appearances from 2009-10.
