Hearing Expected For R.I. Detainee Who Died Of Liver Cancer Not Diagnosed Until Days Before Death

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A federal judge is expected to consider a possible settlement of a lawsuit brought by the ACLU on behalf of the family of a man who died in custody of immigration officials at the Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls.

The ACLU says U.S. District Court Judge William Smith is expected to discuss a proposed settlement at a hearing Thursday morning in the lawsuit brought over the death of Hiu Lui Ng.

Ng, known as Jason, died of advanced liver cancer in August 2008 after spending months at the detention center. His cancer was not diagnosed until days before he died.

The lawsuit accuses Wyatt staff of medically neglecting Ng, a Chinese computer engineer from New York who was detained for overstaying a visa.
