Milford police say an attorney from Orange is charged with two counts of embezzlement after an investigation into his handling of client funds.
Police say one client came to them in August, accusing 53-year-old Michael Hayes of keeping more than $125,000 in life insurance payments from her after her husband died. She said he told her he spent the money on a property in Milford. Police say he wouldn’t tell the woman where the property was, but in the same time period, a limited liability company he had registered bought and renovated a home on Corona Circle in Milford, and had put it up for sale.
Police say Hayes allegedly used funds from another client’s account for part of the property deal, allegedly telling her to keep the purchase “hush-hush,” and saying she would get an interest check this month.
They’re asking anyone who may have other concerns about Hayes’ dealings to get in touch with Milford Police Detective Nash at (203) 783-4730.
