Former Tax Collector Heads to Prison

MILFORD, Conn. (AP) _ A former Oxford tax collector has been sentenced to four years in prison for embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from the town.

The Connecticut Post reports (http://bit.ly/U9T6lj) 63-year-old Karen Guillet was sentenced Wednesday in Milford Superior Court. She pleaded guilty in July to one count of first-degree larceny and agreed to pay the town about $235,000 in restitution.

Prosecutors said Guillet embezzled the money in 2008 and 2009 by using checks to cover cash she was taking. Authorities said the scheme was uncovered when an assistant tax collector noticed irregularities.

State police said Guillet used the money for luxury shopping, spa treatments and a dog walker.
The town also filed a civil suit against Guillet and a judge last year allowed the town to attach her assets up to $699,000.
Guillet’s state pension has been revoked.
