Gas Fire Ties Up I-95 in Milford

A gas leak and fire in Milford closed Interstate 95 in Milford earlier today.

At one point, the highway was shut in both directions.  It reopened southbound first.  The northbound lanes reopened about 2:30.  The problem was reported about 11 am.

The fire has since been put out, and the gas main was shut off.  The gas line was attached to the bridge carrying High Street over I-95.

“DOT bridge safety staff are out, and evaluating the condition of the bridge, to make sure it is safe,” said state Department of Transportation spokesman Kevin Nursick. “Once with have ascertained it is safe, we will allow folks on I-95 to start using the roadway again.”

Nursick says many of the highway bridges in the state carry utilities across roadways.

Governor Malloy announced it at a news conference in Bridgeport.

There was no immediate estimate when things might return to normal.
