Man Charged With Murder After Storm Stabbing

WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) — Police say a 40-year-old Westerly man was charged with murder after allegedly stabbing an acquaintance as superstorm Sandy bore down in Rhode Island.

Police say Mandell Tripp was charged with second-degree murder in the death Monday of 37-year-old Kevin Brown. Brown’s last known address was South Kingstown but Police Chief Edward St. Clair says Brown has local ties. He tells The Associated Press the two knew each other.

Authorities said emergency personnel responded around 1:45 p.m. to a report of a vehicle crashed into a tree and found Brown unresponsive inside, suffering a stab wound. He was later pronounced dead at Westerly Hospital.

Police say witnesses described an altercation at a residence not far from the crash.

St. Clair says Tripp was arraigned and is being held without bail.
