Suspect Claims To Be Witness, Tries To Divert Police
New Haven police say a man claiming to be a helpful witness turned out to be the suspect in an attempted armed robbery at a market on Sylvan Avenue Tuesday — and when they stopped him reached for his backpack, where he had a handgun.
70-year-old Edilberto Fontanez and his 31-year-old son, also Edilberto Fontanez, told police they were tending to business when a man walked in, pointed a gun at the father and walked through the store. The older Fontanez pulled out his own weapon behind the register counter and fired twice, missing the suspect, who ran outside.
Police searching for a suspect say a man flagged them down and pointed the direction he claimed the suspect had run — but they quickly concluded that the person claiming to be a witness was himself their suspect.
They arrested 24-year-old Brandon Anthony Mills of New Haven on robbery and gun charges. Police say he’s a convicted felon and is a suspect in a number of recent robberies in New Haven’s Hill neighborhood.
