NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Could someone within the Jets organization have it out for starting quarterback Mark Sanchez?
A column in Wednesday’s New York Daily News detailed a “brilliant” play designed by offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, called at the “perfect time” against the Steelers. “The design was perfect,” as was the route from Santonio Holmes, wrote Manish Mehta.
But Mark Sanchez fell short. Or, more accurately, he threw long.
The column, which pointed to New York’s missed opportunity as a game-changer in the 27-10 loss, was chock full of formation details and X’s and O’s. It was enough to convince WFAN’s Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton that perhaps there’s a member of the Jets organization doling out anti-Sanchez propaganda.
“If that were written, and it was the third week of the season and I read that, I’m — as the quarterback — thinking that somebody inside that organization, and it’s gotta be somebody within that coaching staff, doesn’t like me,” said Esiason, a former Jets quarterback himself.
Listen to Boomer & Carton’s comments:
Sanchez was ripped by unnamed teammates as “lazy” and “content” in the Daily News after last season’s disappointing 8-8 finish. Enter backup Tim Tebow, who many think will give Sanchez a run for his money at quarterback.
Wednesday’s Daily News column was a hot topic throughout the four-hour-long “Boomer & Carton” show.
“There is someone in that franchise that does not like Mark Sanchez as the starting quarterback,” said Carton. “And enough is enough.”
Esiason said he can understand the negativity toward Sanchez after Sunday’s game, especially when you compare his 10-of-27, 138-yard day against the immovable Ben Roethlisberger.
But Carton wondered why more of the load hasn’t been placed on the shoulders of head coach Rex Ryan’s defense.
“I don’t know what they want,” Carton said, “but clearly it ain’t Mark Sanchez.”
