RI Police Chief To Be Sentenced In Theft Case

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A suspended Rhode Island police chief will be sentenced for stealing $714 from a stripper’s pocketbook following a chase as the remnants of Hurricane Irene hit the region.

North Providence police Col. John Whiting was convicted in July of larceny over $500 and solicitation to receive stolen goods for taking the money in August 2011.

Whiting took the money after chasing down the woman’s SUV following a traffic altercation. The occupants of the car fled, and the woman left behind her purse.

Prosecutors said Whiting rifled through her things and took the money.

Later, prosecutors say, he confessed to stealing it and gave another officer the money, telling him to spend it in Las Vegas.
