Update:  Torrington police say Kaminski was taken into custody about 4:30 p.m. Thursday

Torrington police say they are looking for a handcuffed prisoner who managed to escape from the cuffs and out of the back seat of a police cruiser Wednesday evening and escape into woods off Winsted Road.

Police originally picked up 29-year-old Ryan Kaminski of Winsted on motor vehicle charges,  and when they searched his car, found items stolen in recent car break-ins in Torrington and Winsted.  Officers say they put him in handcuffs in the back seat of a police cruiser,  but he managed to defeat the cruiser’s security and get out of the handcuffs.

Police released a photo and asked the public’s help in locating Kaminski, described as white, 5-foot-8, 140 pounds, wearing a blue t-shirt and blue “Dickie’s” type pants.

Police say he has lived in Bristol,  and has worked as a mechanic in Waterbury and Thomaston.
