Principal’s Lawyer Says Grade-Tampering Charges Are Political

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) _ The lawyer for a New Haven high school principal says allegations of grade-tampering are part of a campaign against his client for refusing to support the re-election of Mayor John DeStefano Jr.

The New Haven Register reports that attorney Michael Jefferson, who represents James Hillhouse High School Principal Kermit Carolina, said the school administrator is being targeted by DeStefano. The mayor denies the accusation.

Carolina and 250 supporters rallied on the school’s steps Tuesday to denounce the report. He was defiant, saying he’s not going anywhere.

New Haven’s school superintendent said Monday that an eight-month investigation found isolated grade-tampering and preferential treatment of student athletes at the school.

City spokeswoman Elizabeth Benton said the allegations were made by a whistle-blower who was an assistant principal at Hillhouse.
