Norwich Man Awaiting Murder Trial Free On Bond

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — A Norwich man awaiting trial for the 2009 shooting death of his newlywed wife has been released from prison after posting a $1 million bond.

Chihan “Eric” Chyung is charged with murder in a shooting that he has described as an accident.

Attorney Brian Woolf tells The Day of New London that Chyung’s family and friends combined efforts to secure his release from prison on Tuesday. He said they paid a fee of $70,000 to a bail bonds company in Hartford and put up cash or real estate as collateral to secure the bond.

Prosecutor David Smith told the newspaper he is looking into options regarding the defendant’s conditions of release.

The 49-year-old Chyung shot Paige Bennett in the head three weeks after they were married, according to authorities.
