MILFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Oxford’s former tax collector, who was accused of stealing nearly $250,000, has pleaded guilty to larceny.

The Connecticut Post and Republican-American report that Karen Guillet (gih-lit) could spend five years in prison after she entered her plea in Milford Superior Court on Tuesday.

The 62-year-old Guillet was arrested last November and charged with larceny and forgery.

State’s Attorney Kevin Lawlor said that as tax collector she misappropriated $243,902 from 2008 to 2009. He says that to balance the books, she used checks to replace cash she was embezzling.

He says the scheme began to unravel after an assistant tax collector determined that Guillet forged a deposit slip.

Guillet’s lawyer said she is extremely remorseful for her actions and any harm to Oxford or her family. He says she intends to make restitution.
