Springfield police have arrested a suspect in the hit-and-run death of a pregnant woman pushing a stroller on a local street Friday.  19-year-old Ashley Ballester was killed and her two-year-old daughter critically injured when they were struck by two cars as she crossed Sumner Avenue about 8:30 p.m.  The first fled the scene,  and the second stopped and cooperated with police.

Police say the driver of the 1999 Suzuki Esteem turned himself in Monday morning.  He’s identified as 35-year-old Michael Wingfield of Springfield. Wingfield is charged with motor vehicle homicide, driving without a license,  using a motor vehicle without authority,  leaving the scene and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.  Police say more charges might be filed.

Ashley Ballester’s daughter,  Lailani,  who will turn two on Friday,  is in intensive care at Baystate Medical Center.
