NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) _ The New London mayor’s office has postponed the layoffs of 25 firefighters following a request by the fire union for a court injunction.
The Day of New London reports that city Chief of Staff Jane Glover says the postponement is “day to day.”
Fire officials were trying to contact employees who had been bracing for the layoffs to take effect at 5:30 p.m.
Firefighters accounting for a third of the city’s fire department were facing layoffs after the City Council decided Monday evening not to act on a concession agreement. An amended contract would have reduced mandatory staffing levels on each shift and eliminated two planned raises in exchange for keeping the jobs.
